They found each other on an international dating site — a widowed North American man and a Ukrainian woman teaching traumatized children to sing again in the shadow of war. Their first evening together lasted less than an hour before a fire alarm tore them apart. She flew home to Ukraine. He flew home to an empty house. Neither could forget the other.

Then war arrived.

Her emails began carrying what her words could not quite say — a shaking fear, an unspoken longing, the weight of a woman whose heart cried to have her man at her side. The desire to find shelter in his arms, but knowing the danger, it was a longing for which she would never ask to be fulfilled.

Without being asked, without hesitation, he abandoned everything and flew into a country on fire to find his soulmate. Through missile attacks, drone strikes, and broken roads, he kept moving. Always one day behind her. Never once looking back.

While the whole world watched their love letters on the evening news and called them Romeo and Juliet — while strangers across continents united in the desperate hope of reuniting two people searching for their happy ever after — she was running for her life.

Their real emails — including messages written during active missile attacks — appear throughout this novel, putting readers inside the fear, the longing, and the love in real time. When the reader reads words from a woman inside a bomb shelter, when they read her say, “We are trapped…”, they are reading the real words and feeling the real emotions of the real woman who wrote them.

This is an interactive novel. Readers are warmly invited to write directly to Cal and Dasha — the fictional characters and hearts at the center of this story. The readers will receive personal responses in character. Because some love stories don’t end on the last page.
